Profile of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji ( The Living Guru ) :

This Sacred volume of Sri Guru Granth Sahib encompasses the recitation of 7 Gurus and 29 Saints. This Holy Book was initially compiled by the Fifth Guru, Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji in 1603-04 and recensed by the tenth guru, Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji in 1706. Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji comprises of 1430 pages written in Gurmukhi script. There are total of 31 Raagas included in it. Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji was installed on 16th October, 1604 at Sri Harmandar Sahib, Amritsar. The First Granthi was Baba Budda Ji. Below are mentioned the names of those souls whose ideas and exalted thoughts are expressed in it : Guru Nanak Dev Ji ( 947 Shabads in 19 Raagas ), Guru Angad Dev Ji ( 63 Shaloks ), Guru Amar Das Ji ( 869 Shabads in 17 Raagas ), Guru Ram Das Ji ( 638 Shabads in 30 Raagas ), Guru Arjan Dev Ji ( 2312 Shabads & Shaloks in 29 Raagas ), Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji ( 59 Shabads in 14 Raags & 56 Shaloks ), Guru Gobind Singh Ji ( 1 Shalok ) Sadhna (a butcher) ( 1 Shabad ), Surdas (a brahmin) ( 2 Shabads ), Sein (a barber) ( 1 Shabad ), Kabir (a weaver) ( 534 Shabads & Shlokas ), Jaidev (a brahmin author of Geeta Govind) ( 2 Shabads ), Trilochan (a vaisha) ( 5 Shabads ), Dhanna ( jat) ( 4 Shabads ), Namdev (calico printer) ( 62 Shabads ), Parmanand ( indeterminate origin ) ( 1 Shabad ), Pipa ( a Rajput King) ( 1 Shabad ), Sheikh Farid ( a sufi saint ) ( 123 Shabads & Shaloks ), Beni ( indeterminate origin ) ( 3 Shabads ), Bhikhan (a brahmin) ( 2 Shabads ), Mardana (Guru Nanak Dev Ji's longtime companion) (3 Shaloks ), Ravidas (a cobbler ) ( 40 Shabads ), Ramanand (a brahmin) ( 1 Shabad ), Satta and Balwand (bards) ( 8 Vaars ), Sunder (Guru Amar Das Ji's great grandson) ( 6 verses known as sudh), miscellaneous Bhatts ( brahmins) ( 123 Swayas ). On 6th October 1708, the day before Guru Gobind Singh Ji passed away. He sent for a coconut which, together with the Five pice ( a currency unit ), he placed before the Adi Granth and made obeisance to it. He then declare that the line of living Gurus had come to an end and that henceforth all Sikhs should regard the Granth Sahib Ji as the Guru. The successive Gurus had said that whatever they composed, their Bani emanated from divine inspiration. None claimed any attribute of divinity for Himself.The sanctity of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji is inculcated in the mind of every Sikh since childhood. The most important thing about Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji is that it is written in the spoken language of the people to whom the masters delivered their message of devotion to God and the service to humanity. Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji is the only scripture that has come down through the generations in it's original form without the change of a single word or a vowel sign.
